Barometers For Sale

If you're interested in buying any of the barometers featured here, please contact me.

While I am happy to post most items to you, unfortunately this is not possible with mercury barometers as carriers will not take them due to the risk of mercury spillage. I personally believe it is always better to see them 'in the flesh' before buying anyway, and then you can take them with you, avoiding the potential for damage!
I don't take credit cards, but if you want to secure a purchase immediately, I am happy to give you my bank details for an internet payment.

All barometers I sell have been fully overhauled by me personally and are fully guaranteed for one year.

Victorian 5-dial Rosewood Banjo (or Wheel) Barometer

This is a lovely example.
It is the classic 5-dial banjo, or wheel barometer with a mercury tube inside. Because of the mercury tube this item is for

COLLECTION ONLY

The 5 dials are, starting at the top, a hygrometer, a thermometer, a convex mirror , the main dial and a spirit level.
Hygrometers in these barometers are only comparative instruments, not showing the absolute humidity but a rough scale from -20 through 0 to +20 for very dry through to very humid.
The thermometer on this one shows the temperature only in Fahrenheit (down the left side of the tube), with some 'important' temperatures - blood heat, Summer heat, temporate and freezing down the right side.
The main dial is 10" across with the outer line of the engraving at 9" diameter, and the case is 12" at its widest point, so it is very easy to read. It has a brass reference hand remotely set by the ivory knob below the main dial.
Spirit levels on these are notoriously useless as they are completely flat tubes so if the barometer is vertical the bubble will not move, regardless of where it is!
This particular barometer is 42" overall height.

Dimensions: Height - 42" (107cm), thickness - 3" (7.5cm); width of case at main dial - 12" (30.5cm)

The dials are a thermometer, and the main dial.
The thermometer on this one shows Fahrenheit only with some 'important' temperatures - blood heat, Summer heat, temperate and freezing - named on the other side.
The main dial is 8" across, (the case is 10" here), so it is very easy to read. It has a convex glass in the brass bezel, and a brass reference hand behind the main hand, remotely set by the ivorine knob below the main dial.
It is signed A Mantegani (of) Wisbeach (an old spelling of Wisbech), which is in Cambridgeshire. He was apparently working from 1810 to 1846, so although it could be mistaken for Art Nouveau it is actually much older.
This particular barometer is 36.5" overall height.

Dimensions: Height - 36.5", thickness - 2.25"; width of case at main dial - 10"
